The Fallen series, written by Lauren Kate in 2009, is a young adult gothic fantasy. The Fallen series consists of four books: Fallen, Torment, Passion, and Rapture.
Fallen is a grim story. It centers on Luce’s experience after being transferred to a special school. The locations shift from different schools and different countries as the story progresses.
The first book in the series gives the collection its name. It begins with Luce’s entrance to the reform school, Sword and Cross, where she meets many new people, including a few love interests who play important roles in the plot.
With one exception, Luce discovers that the kids at the reform school are fallen angels. They have chosen to be on God’s or Satan’s side. Daniel, Luce’s main love interest in the series, has yet to choose sides.
Kate follows up with the love narrative of Daniel and Luce in the second novel of the series. It has a particularly grim tone based on the couple’s past and future.
In Torment, Daniel abandons Luce in a safe location during a lengthy fight in which he must take part. There, she meets several new students who have yet to join sides. This incident convinces Luce that Daniel is concealing information from her. After that, she becomes eager to discover the truth for herself.
The first book of the series reached the number five position on the New York Times bestseller list. It was also included in the USA Today, Indie, and Publishers Weekly Flying Start bestseller lists.
