Chanel Cleeton’s 2018 novel Next Year in Havana delves deep into her background. As a Cuban American, it portrays a sweeping story of love, sorrow, and identity.

In the book, Marisol Ferrera travels to a freshly opened Havana in 2017. She does this to obey her grandmother’s final wishes and spread her ashes in her motherland. Marisol’s voyage of discovery mixes with stories of her grandmother Elisa’s tragic past. She embarks on a clandestine affair with a revolutionary during the unrest in 1958 in Havana.

Chanel, who is originally from Florida, grew up hearing stories about her family’s departure from Cuba. It was a necessary step following the circumstances of the Cuban Revolution. Her interest in politics and history grew throughout her time spent in England. She earned a bachelor’s degree in International Relations from American International University. She got her masters in Global Politics from the School of Economics and Political Science and later went on to get a Juris Doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law.
