Dorothea Benton Frank was an American author who wrote 20 bestselling novels set in the Low Country of South Carolina. She was an award-winning author whose work has been translated into numerous languages and published worldwide.
Her trilogy – Beach Music; The Stonewall Inn; and Dancing in the Dark – has been optioned by Ridley Scott’s production company.
Dorothea Frank was born in 1951 and raised on Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, with her four siblings. She graduated from General William Moultrie High School in 1969. Her passion for retail clothing led her to the Fashion Institute of America, where she graduated in 1972.
Her protagonists, strong women who prioritize family and home, deal with unstable and frequently destructive relationships. Her writings inspired women of all ages. She wrote about identity and bittersweet journeys of finding oneself through a sense of place.
Dorothea died in September 2019 after a brief battle with leukemia. She was 67 years old and left behind her husband, Peter Richard Frank, a daughter, a grandson, and a son.
