Larry McMurtry is a Western author from the United States, born in 1936 in Archer City, Texas. The author spent his childhood on his parent’s ranch.
He earned his M.A. from Rice University in 1960. In 1970, the author opened the first bookstore to supplement his teaching position at Rice University and his writing. The store gained publicity as one of the most popular bookstores in the country. Despite this, in 2015, Larry was close to shutting down the Archer City branch, as he couldn’t compete with the online book industry, but chose to keep it open after great public support.
McMurtry began his literary career when he enrolled in Stanford’s Wallace Stegner writing school. Larry’s talents were noticed by Stegner, who was a well-known western writer. He encouraged him to investigate the Modern West.
Larry’s writings stood out because he presented the Old West in a more realistic light. The people before him were known for looking at the books through a rose prism colored with myths and tradition. But Larry’s tales were downright cruel. He wasn’t afraid to confront the hard facts of life in the Old West. As a result, he attracted a large number of admirers.
Larry McMurtry was married twice. Jo Scott was his first wife. They had a child together. The relationship ended in divorce. Later, he married Norma Faye. Larry McMurtry died in 2021, at the age of 84.
