The Inspector Lynley mystery series, written by Elizabeth George, is set in the United Kingdom. It follows Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley’s investigations.
Lynley isn’t the average Scotland Yard agent. He is the 8th Earl of Asherton and was educated privately at Eton College and Oxford University. He is the opposite of his partner, Detective Barbara Havers, who comes from a working-class family. They collaborate to capture criminals, although it means working outside of their authority.
The first book called A Great Deliverance was published in 1988. Lynley and Havers are first presented when he gets the task of Roberta Teys, who killed her father.
Lynley and Havers have many personality clashes including gender and status throughout the series. Havers is described as a short-tempered person who is difficult to work with. Her bad attitude causes her to be dismissed from the series. Lynley, her superior, is someone she despises. Havers has the responsibility of looking after her parents, which is a draining job.
They make earth-shattering findings as they travel through the English countryside.
The large following of the series is a testament to Elizabeth George’s incredible narrating abilities.
